Fleet Stats

The three tables which form the Fleet Statistics section are all updated to 12th February 2010

Which depot has the youngest fleet, the oldest vehicle, the most low floors? You can find out here.

In all three tables, each of the six depots which form Stagecoach North East are represented in normal typeface and depot rank is indicated in [square brackets] for relevant analyses.  For ease of comparison, a combined analysis for both Newcastle depot is included in italics in each table but 'Newcastle' is not included in the ranking (this being reserved for individual depots).

The Northern and Southern divisions are summarised in bold in each table, followed by an overall summary for Stagecoach North East as a whole.

Table 1: Fleet Age

A straightforward look at the average fleet age and the two extremes - youngest & oldest.

Fleet Age Summary:

  • Overall Walkergate operates the most youthful fleet, with the lowest average fleet age.

  • The depots with the least old vehicle in service as their oldest bus are Hartlepool and Sunderland (both operate a fleet of P-reg or newer vehicles).

  • Sunderland also operates the youngest vehicles - brand new 59 plate Enviro200s.

  • Teesside operate the most aged fleet, currently operating with the oldest average fleet age.

  • Despite operating the second youngest fleet, Hartlepool are actually the depot which have the least young vehicles as their newest (being  08-plate Enviro 200s).

Table 2: easyACCESS Analysis

A detailed analysis of the easyACCESS operations & allocations across Stagecoach North East.
% easyACCESS (operations) reflects the percentage of the commercial PVR which is operated by low floor buses.
% easyACCESS (fleet) indicates the proportion of the total allocation which is made up of easyACCESS vehicles.
% easyACCESS spares (operations) indicates what percentage of the allocated easyACCESS vehicles are spare, based on easyACCESS commercial PVR.
% easyACCESS spares (fleet) indicates what percentage of the allocated easyACCESS vehicles are spare, based on total easyACCESS allocation.

easy ACCESS fleet Summary:

  • The highest proportion of easyACCESS routes operated by a depot by far is at Hartlepool, with 100% easyACCESS operation.

  • The lowest proportion, at just under three quarters of their PVR, is Teesside.

  • The depot with the highest proportion of their total fleet being easyACCESS is Sunderland.

  • Teesside operate the smallest (proportional to total fleet size) easyACCESS fleet.  However, this is due to the large number of high floor decker contract services operated by Teesside.

  • Teesside therefore also have by far the highest number of spare easyACCESS vehicles compared to commercial easyACCESS PVR.  The reason for Teesside's disproportionately generous easyACCESS allocation (relative to easyACCESS PVR) is unknown - it certainly doesn't lead to reliable easyACCESS allocations on supposedly easyACCESS routes!

  • Teesside also have the highest number of spare easyACCESS vehicles out of the total number  allocated.

  • Hartlepool have by far the fewest easyACCESS spares in terms of both commercial PVR and as a proportion of the total number of easyACCESS vehicles allocated.

  • The Northern Division of Stagecoach North East operates the highest proportion of easyACCESS services (against total PVR), and also has the highest number of easyACCESS vehicles as a percentage of the divisions' total fleet.

Table 3: Age & Capacity

A further look at the spare capacity and an alterative way of looking at the fleet age.
% spares (operations) reflects the percentage of the total fleet which is spare (against total PVR).
% spares (fleet) reflects the percentage of the total fleet which is spare (against total fleet).

Age & Capacity Summary:

  • Teesside has the highest total spare vehicle percentage in the North East.

  • Walkergate has the lowest total spare vehicle percentage in the North East.

  • Walkergate also has by far the lowest % of vehicles over 10 years of age (though Hartlepool have the lowest absolute number due to their significantly smaller fleet size).

  • Teesside have the most vehicles over 10 years of age (both in terms of absolute numbers and as a % of their fleet).

  • The recent influx of new vehicles to Stagecoach North East has seen the total number of vehicles over 10 years of age to fall from around 50% to 44%.  Though representing a clear improvement, this still relatively high figure is a damning legacy of several consecutive years with no new vehicle investment in the early 2000's.
