Part 1: The early years, 1976-1984

 


The origins

        of Stagecoach UK Bus

can be traced back to 1976 when Ann and Robin Gloag began a caravan rental business under the name Gloagtrotter. The move toward passenger vehicle transport occurred in March 1980 with the purchase of a Ford Transit minibus (TYJ161M) which carried out private hire contracts under the GT Coaches name. It later additionally saw use on stage carriage service.

1980: STAGECOACH IS BORN

Coinciding with the move toward passenger transport, Ann's brother Brian Souter joined the company in March 1980. Over the course of 1980, GT Coaches won further contracts and increased their fleet with seven second-hand full sized vehicles by the end of the year. The first was HHW452D, an ECW bodied Bristol MW5G which was deployed on lucrative works service. Having initally been purchased for a trip to China which ultimately never occurred, the £425 purchase cost was more than recouped within the first few weeks of the Balfour Beattie contract transporting workers between Perth and Pitlochry. This was followed by an Alexander bodied Leyland Leopard (KJA261F), initially deployed like the Transit on private hire duties. Next came an ECW bodied Bristol MW6G (HDV639E) and a Duple bodied Volvo B58 (LYS457P), purchased using Iain (Ann & Brian's father) Souter's redundancy/severance pay from Alexanders.

Further diversification came as a result of Transport Act of 1980, which allowed operators to run express services of over 30 miles in length without formal approval from the Traffic Commissioner. It was as a consequence of this diversification into long distance express service operation that the Stagecoach trading name was adopted in 1980, the name initially spelled Stage Coach and the brain-child of Ann and Brian's brother David, who worked with them as a consultant.

The operation of 'The Stage Coach' (Dundee Glasgow London) commenced on 9th October 1980. The operation proved highly successful, laying the foundations for expansion the following year.

The service was operated by the Volvo B58 and a Plaxton bodied AEC Reliance (RSN433M), acquired for this purpose. Both carried lettering for the service, though RSN433M was repainted to GT Coaches livery within a couple of months. A Plaxton bodied Volvo B58 (LUB508P), was acquired later that year - initially carrying original Stage Coach red and white livery but without fleetnames.

In the final days of 1980, further diversification to local stage carriage service occurred, with the acquisition of A & C McLennan's Perth to Errol service. Stagecoach took over operation of the route from 22 December 1980, initially on hire to McLennan until the licence was surrendered on 31 Jan 1981. This early acquisition was initially operated by the Leopard KJA261F, but soon saw the first double decker vehicle join the fleet as a Bristol FLF6G Lodekka (FGM306D) was purchased from Central SMT. The Lodekka received GT Coaches livery and fleetnames and became the regular allocation for the Perth to Errol service.

With the McLennan route, that operator's Errol depot was also acquired as a base for the GT Coaches operation. Toward the end of the year GT Coaches/Stagecoach also obtained a new operating base at Friarton Road, Perth Harbour.

1981: STAGECOACH STRIPES

Another of Graham Martin-Bates' collection; one of the earliest examples of Stagecoach artwork as seen in a local newspaper advertisement from 5 January 1981 for the Dundee to London service.


Following the success of the initial cross-border express service launched in 1980, further express services were added in 1981, including an Aberdeen to Dundee service, connecting with the London coach, and an Aberdeen to Berwick service (the latter marketed as Aberdeen to Newcastle, with the Berwick to Newcastle section operated by H.E. Craiggs of Amble).

This expansion led to the purchase of the first brand new coach for Stagecoach in February 1981 - FES831W - a 50-seat Volvo B10M with Duple Dominant body. This was not only the company's first new vehicle it also introduced the iconic stripes, designed again by Ann and Brian's brother David Souter.

The ochre (later replaced by orange), red and blue pattern on white base continued to define the Stagecoach fleet until the turn of the millennium in 2000. With the stripes established in 1981, the GT Coaches name was gradually phased out in favour of Stagecoach.


1981 saw further developments on long distance express work, with the Aberdeen to Berwick service curtailed to run Aberdeen to Edinburgh, and a new service introduced between Aberdeen and Blackpool. Services were also numbered for the first time in May 1981, with the London service being numbered 1, the Edinburgh service numbered 2 and Blackpool 3. As the company continued to seek to expand, a pair of convertible open top Bristol Lodekkas (866NHT & 867NHT), intended for use on a Perth City Tour, which ultimately did not materialise. Both received GT coaches livery but Stagecoach fleetnames. Their upper decks were additionally emblazoned with an image of a plane (866NHT) and a train (867NHT), these being retained having been applied by their previous owners.

Bristol MW5G HHW452D left the fleet during the latter part of 1981, replaced by a further pair of Lodekkas, HGM334E & HGM335E, both of which received GT Coaches livery with Stagecoach fleetnames.

Plaxton bodied Leyland Leopard EUG455K was briefly acquired during 1981, and disposed of within the same year (though destined to return to the fleet some two years later). A further second-hand acquisition was Bedford YMT/Duple bodied MWA844P.

A further four new coaches were also purchased throughout the year: Volvo B58/Duple HSP593W in June followed in July by Plaxton bodied Volvo B58 HSP594W. October saw delivery of Duple bodied Volvo B58 JSR42X, with similar JSR43X following in November.

1982: CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION

In order to focus on passenger transport, the Gloagtrotter caravan rental and minibus hire businesses were sold in early 1982. The sale of the Gloagtrotter business released capital, which enabled the purchase of two new Neoplan Skyliner luxury double deck coaches (LSP222X & LSP223X). These vehicles were used on a new service operating between Aberdeen and London via Birmingham, but omitting Glasgow, under the name 'Superstage'.

The arrival of the Neoplans coincided with the departure of the two original 'Stage Coach' branded coaches, RSN433M and LYS457P, both sold in early 1982, though the original Aberdeen to London via Glasgow service 1 on which they had been used also continued to operate.

With the Skyliners came the more familiar Stagecoach name as one word, and the introduction of 'Feed Bags'. Graham Martin-Bates provides the images above and recalls that they were provided as follows on the London service: There would be a sandwich, a biscuit or cake. There would be a cup with either a teabag or coffee. Southbound : tea = blue; coffee = red. Hot water was brought round in large flasks. Northbound had a carton of orange juice = orange.


1982 also saw the introduction, in collaboration with the Perth Tourist Association, of service S - which ran in the winter months, starting January, to transport skiers from Perth to the slopes at Glenshee.

A further two new Skyliners (NES481Y & NES482Y) were purchased in December that year along with a number of second-hand vehicles (Lodekkas WNO984F & AEV820F and ECW bodied Bristol VRLLH OCK68K) throughout the year as several contract services were won and yet more express journeys were added to the growing Stagecoach network. The Lodekkas received GT livery with Stagecoach names (the last to do so), while the Bristol VR together with the Neoplans received full Stagecoach livery.

1983: A YEAR OF CHANGE

Another example from Graham Martin-Bates' collection is this timetable for the new intercity service introduced between Glasgow and Edinburgh in August 1983.

1983 saw further expansion of the express service network, most notably the first foray into Inverness, with services to Glasgow (service 4), London and Edinburgh (new service 3) from the town. New intercity service D was introduced between Edinburgh and Glasgow and 1983 also saw the beginnings of Stagecoach operation of the Perth City Sightseeing Tour and various other day tours under the Fantasia Tours name. To meet the increased vehicle requirements, three Van Hool Astromega double deck coaches (NDS840Y, NDS841Y and NDS842Y) joined the fleet in March. A new depot was also acquired at Port Dundas, Glasgow.

Leaving the fleet early in 1983 were troublesome Bristol VRLLH OCK68K, one of the original vehicles, Leyland Leopard KJA261F and Bedford YMT MWA844P.

Stagecoach purchased a number of additional new vehicles during 1983, including six Volvo B10Ms (NES483Y, A78RGE, A271GJU, A798TGG, A799TGG & A800TGG) and four Neoplan Skyliners (MVL607/608Y & A143/146RVL). MVL607Y and MVL608Y came from dealer stock and carried green and blue base colours, respectively, which they retained for a time.

In addition to outright purchases, Stagecoach took on long-term hire three coaches from Whytes, Newmacher. Two Caetano bodied (WCO733V and WCO734V) and one Duple bodied (RJS518V) Volvo B58, all three were painted into Stagecoach livery.

Robin Gloag left the company in 1983, taking Volvo B58/Plaxton coach LUB508P, to form his new business, Highwayman Coaches. Other vehicles to leave the fleet during the year comprised Lodekkas 376RNN (for spares) and AEV812F (destroyed by fire in November, only a few months after arriving), as well as short-lived Astromegas NDS840Y and NDS842Y.

During 1983, the Neoplans began to receive new registrations. The first was LSP223X, which became NSP823Y. Similar LSP222X received the company's first 'cherished' registration 4009SC in September at which point NSP823Y was further reregistered 8000SC. A couple of months later, MVL608Y became 5142SC.

November 1983 saw the first major acquisition by Stagecoach, purchasing Adamson & Low of Edinburgh including their fleet of 17 vehicles, the depot area and contract services. The vehicles transferred in the sale were Plaxton bodied Fords LSG727P, WSG395R, WFS154R, TCS557V, TCS558V, TCS559V, OSG741Y; Duple bodied Fords LNX318L, DFS789S, DFS790S; Ford Transit SGG452R; Bedfords BTD488E, RCN13N, RWB653R and new Duple bodied B10Ms A270GJU, A272GJU and A273GJU. While the B10Ms were retained the majority of the Fords were disposed of and replaced within the first few months of Stagecoach ownership.

Further expansion occurred later in the same month as Stagecoach took over the operation of Parks of Hamilton's express coach service between Glasgow and London. The service continued to be operated by Parks vehicles to which removable Stagecoach name panels were fitted.

A further service was purchased, between Ardrossan and Glasgow, from Bennett, Kilwinning in December 1983. Included in the sale were two Leyland Leopards (JRB743N and PCS861X).

The first of the replacements for the Adamson & Low subsidiary, which was operated under a separate licence but with Stagecoach livery, began to arrive in December. These included Duple Dominant bodied Volvo B58 MCS991W and Leopards JKU450P and JKU453P.

1984: RELATIVE CALM

Compared to the year which had preceded it, and the major changes which would occur in the years which followed, 1984 was comparatively quiet. The year was not wasted however, with the continued growth of the service network as well as continued growth in passenger numbers on the long distance express services.

The year saw fewer fleet movements at Perth, with only four new vehicles (all Neoplan) purchased - A331/2/4/5UFE.

Throughout 1984, the re-registration of the Neoplan Skyliner fleet continued apace, with NES481Y becoming 2345SC, NES482Y - 9492SC, MVL607Y - 4585SC and A146RVL re-registered 5889SC.

A pair of second hand Neoplans were also acquired this year, STT601X and STT602X, which later the same year were reregistered 7376SC and 4040SC, respectively. Of these, 7376SC was a short lived member of the fleet, being burned out in July 1984, only a few months after purchase.

The Bristol Lodekka fleet also further expanded with the acquisition of a number of second hand examples (LWC660C, WNO973F & GDL768/769/771/816E).

Perhaps the most significant event of for Stagecoach in 1984 was the relocation of operations to large new premises at Walnut Grove, Perth - heralding the sale of the Friarton Road premises and the mothballing of the Errol depot.

Departures from the Stagecoach fleet during 1984 included the last Astromega NDS841Y, Lodekkas WNO984F and SVX278D, Leyland Leopard EUG455K, and Volvo B10M HSP594W.

The Adamson & Low subsidiary saw significant fleet movements during the year as efforts were made to replace many of the inherited vehicles with newer second hand stock. During 1984, no less than nine of the 17 vehicles acquired with the Adamson & Low business were sold - WSG395R, TSC557/8/9V, LNX318L, DFS789/90S, RWB653R and WFS154R.

Replacements came both from the Stagecoach fleet, and from acquisitions. Vehicles transferred from Stagecoach were Volvo B58 BGG162S, Lodekka FGM301D, Leyland Leopards PCS861X and JRB743N, and Bristol MW6G HDV639E.

Acquisitions for the Adamson & Low subsidiary comprised Bristol LH6L, VOD110K, Duple bodied Leyland Leopards USU172W, JKU451P and JKU454P, Plaxton bodied Volvo B58 9039RU (originally XEH3S), Plaxton bodied Leyland Leopard FSD89V and a pair of Leyland PD3A double deckers, LJF27F and LJF28F. JKU451P was a relatively short lived member of the fleet, being a fire victim within its first year.

During the year, the double deck coach fleet began to receive fleetnumbers. Neoplan Skyliners received numbers N1 4009SC, N2 8000SC, N3 2345SC, N4 9492SC, N5 4585SC, N6 5142SC, N7 A143RVL, N8 5889SC, N9 7376SC, N10 4040SC, N11 A331UFE, N12 A332UFE, N14 A334UFE and N15 A335UFE. N13 was carried by Astromega NDS841Y.
