
provide bus services throughout the North East of England, with operating centres in Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland to the North and Hartlepool and Teesside to the South.
The operations are divided into these Northern and Southern regions based upon the territories of their predecessors, Busways Travel Services Limited and Cleveland Transit Limited respectively. Across each of the six depots within the group the fleet composition varies; a brief profile of each of the Stagecoach North East operating companies and fleets follows.
Until August 2007,
Stagecoach North East also included Stagecoach in Darlington.
On 22nd August 2007, the Darlington operations were sold to
Arriva North East.
NORTHERN DIVISION (Busways Travel Services Limited)
Stagecoach in Newcastle
operates from 2 bases:
Walkergate to the East of the City and Slatyford to
the West.
Slatyford
depot is the former home of Newcastle Busways while Walkergate
depot is the replacement for the long since demolished Byker depot, former home of
City Busways (and later Newcastle Busways) and Blue Bus Services.
Both depots operate their own services under the Stagecoach in Newcastle
name as well as jointly operating some services. The Walkergate
fleet is primarily composed of easyACCESS Enviro400 and Enviro400H deckers. The most recent deliveries have been the 26 hybrid deckers (Enviro400H) for Services 39 and 40 and fourteen 60-plate standard Enviro 400s. Inluding the hybrids, Walkergate currently operate some 90 Enviro 400 deckers. The Walkergate allocation is completed with eight ALX300 bodied MANs, six ALX200 bodied low floor Darts and five ALX 300 bodied Volvo B10BLES, the latter living on borrowed time and usually found on Service X63. The Slatyford
fleet is composed primarily of easyACCESS ALX300 bodied MANs, Enviro400 deckers and Enviro200 MAN midibuses. The Slatyford allocation is rounded off with a number of ALX200 bodied low floor Darts and a quintet of early style Enviro300 single decks. Slatyford's most recent new deliveries were back in 2008/09, with the arrival of nine 58-plate Enviro200 MAN midibuses. In addition to standard City services, Slatyford operates express Service 100 to the Gateshead MetroCentre, using the branded 05-plate Dennis Enviro300s and also operate branded 06-plate MANs on Service X47. Slatyford also operate the City Sightseeing fleet which currently comprises 5 former Sunderland Busways converted open top Leyland Olympians.
Stagecoach in South Shields
is based in Chichester,
the former home of South Shields Busways and Economic. The South Shields fleet is dominated by Enviro200 midibuses and Enviro300 single decks. Modest fleets of ALX300 bodied MANs and both Pointer and ALX200 bodied low floor Darts are also operated. South Shields has seen an influx of new vehicles in recent times, including eighteen 11-plate Enviro 300's and nineteen 61-plate Enviro200's.
Stagecoach in South Shields operates local town services as well as 3 'E' routes into Sunderland (using branded Enviro300s) and express Service X34 to Newcastle (using branded MANs, which carry an all-blue version of the corporate livery).
Stagecoach in Sunderland
is based at the
Wheatsheaf, the head office of Stagecoach North East. Prior to Stagecoach ownership, this depot was home to Sunderland Busways and Favourite. Stagecoach in Sunderland operate mainly easyACCESS ALX300 bodied MANs, Enviro200 midibuses (including both integrated Enviro200 Dart and MAN chassis) and Pointer bodied Dart SLFs. A few ALX200 bodied low floor Darts also hang on in the fleet. Sunderland's newest vehicles were a batch of fourteen 59-plate intergrated Enviro200 easyACCESS Darts.
Stagecoach in Sunderland operations are confined to the city boundaries.
SOUTHERN DIVISION (Cleveland Transit Limited)
Stagecoach in Hartlepool
is based at Brenda Road
depot, home to Hartlepools youthful fleet of easyACCESS Enviro200 bodied MAN midibuses and Pointer bodied Dart SLFs. The Hartlepool fleet is rounded off
with a few ALX 200 bodeied low floor Darts that hang on. Stagecoach in Hartlepool operates local town services as well as the longer distance easyACCESS flagship Service 1 to Middlesbrough. Hartlepool's newest vehicles were a batch of 19 08-plated Enviro200 bodied MAN midibuses which
represented bulk replacement of almost 50% of the fleet.
Stagecoach on Teesside
is based at Church Road
Stockton, the former home of Cleveland Transit. The Stagecoach on Teesside fleet is composed mainly of Volvo Olympians, easyACCESS ALX300 bodied MANs and Teesside's newest vehicles, a batch of fifteen 09-plate Enviro300 single decks. The Teesside allocation is completed by a small number of ALX300 bodied Volvo B10BLEs, most commonly to be found on Service 35.
Operations are principally localised in and between the towns of Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees, with longer distance easyACCESS Service 36 extending to Hartlepool and utilising branded Envro300 single deck vehicles.
